As part of my trip to Japan in 2010, I visited the sacred mountain of Koya-san, with one of the two sites we visited being Danjo Garan.
Danjo Garan is one of the two most sacred sites on the mountain of Koyasan. This sacred area consists of nearly twenty different structures including the magnificent Konpon Daito structure. If you can envision the entirety of Danjo Garan, the design of the area and its buildings combine to form an image that represents the Womb Realm of Mandala, or ‘circle’. It’s a spiritual and ritual symbol in Hinduism and Buddhism, representing the Universe.
